about

Each year, the ‘Adelaide 500’ (a round of the Repco Supercars Championship held in Adelaide, South Australia) has featured a RAAF military jet performing an aerial handling display above the racetrack on the final Saturday and Sunday afternoons (the latter including a final fly-by salute). The 2023 event featured an F-35A Lightning II, as well as a solo flying display by a Pilatus 21-C training aircraft.

The flight displays of the F-35A Lightning II and the Pilatus 21-C were both recorded in parallel with two separate rigs. I have described these rigs as ‘Perspective 1’ and ‘Perspective 2’. The ‘perspectives’ are not a matter of spatial location (the geographical location of both rigs is the same), but of the very different characteristics and qualities of the microphones and of their particular arrangements. Moreover, there was a slight difference between the ‘Perspective 2’ arrangement between the Saturday and Sunday recordings.

PERSPECTIVE 1: A pair of MKH 8040 cardioid microphones in ORTF into a Zoom F3. (This rig was positioned at the centre between the two microphones of the second rig.)

PERSPECTIVE 2: A pair of MKH 8020s omnidirectional microphones in AB, with a spacing of 24 feet (7.3 metres) for the Saturday session, and 30 feet (9.1 metres) for the final Sunday session, into a MixPre-6 II. (For the Saturday recording, the 8020s set vertically, pointing directly upwards. For the Sunday recording, they were angled towards a point above the racetrack stadium, which was the proximal focal point of the F35A’s aerial display.)

In addition, each recording of the F35A is presented in two versions: a normalised version (the ‘N-version’) and a loudness-adjusted ‘phenomenological version’ (the Φ-version).

N-VERSION: Normalised to -1.00 dB, but otherwise raw, with no further processing or effects (just some minor editing to shorten the time before the final ‘salute’ fly-by in the Sunday recording).

Φ-VERSION: With loudness adjustments to the normalised and edited version, to recreate and represent a much more ‘phenomenologically realistic’ auditory experience; that is to say, a listening experience somewhat closer to that of actual embodied presence, which a merely normalised version cannot evoke.

These recordings were made respectfully on the land of the indigenous Kaurna people.
